Kinetio® – Towards a better understanding of feed ingredients

Creating high-quality swine feed requires a detailed approach, taking into account the raw materials, production goals, and the specific needs of pigs at each stage of their growth and development. It's important to carefully assess ingredients to match their nutritional value to each production phase. Our research and development team are committed to understanding swine digestion and continually enhancing our nutritional insights. With data from research and commercial trials at our facilities in Canada and the Trouw Nutrition Swine Research Center in the Netherlands, we have introduced a new approach in the swine feed formulation using nutrient kinetics, known as Kinetio® technology.

What is Kinetio?

Kinetio technology analyzes the speed at which nutrients in feed are digested, distinguishing whether they break down quickly, slowly, or not at all. Feed ingredients provide energy and nutrients like protein, amino acids, fat, starch, and fiber. Digestion involves breaking down these components into forms that animals can absorb and use. Nutrient kinetics focuses on how fast this breakdown occurs, which can be crucial for supporting pigs' health and productivity at various life stages. Based on these kinetics, nutritionists can craft specific diets to meet unique goals.

At Trouw Nutrition, we’ve built an extensive nutrient kinetics database, currently covering protein and fiber kinetics for around 300 feed ingredients. This database allows us to better understand local ingredients and optimize the value for our customers. Kinetio technology opens up new options to use alternative ingredients effectively. By leveraging nutrient kinetics, we can maximize animal performance.

After five years of successfully using Kinetio in nursery programs and completing several development projects, we’re expanding its application to grower-finisher pigs and sows. For lactating sows, the goal is to boost milk production while preserving their protein reserves. Our trials show that a carefully controlled level of slow-digesting protein in the diet can reduce body weight loss in sows and enhance litter growth (Table 1), with consistent results in our research centers in the Netherlands and Quebec.

Table 1: Results from our trial at a Quebec research facility confirm that higher levels of slow-digesting protein in lactation diets increase milk production (shown by litter growth) and minimize sow weight loss.

For grower-finisher pigs, Kinetio helps us optimize the use of various ingredients while maintaining high performance. Through extensive testing, we’ve identified the right protein and fiber digestibility balance to support pigs’ growth potential across different regions and feed options.

In Summary

Kinetio technology is revolutionizing swine feed formulation, enhancing how we understand and use feed ingredients. Our research demonstrates that Kinetio can maximize milk production in sows and provide flexibility in feed formulation for grower-finisher pigs.
